How to Edit 360-degree Panoramic Photos

Panorama photography has become quite popular now a day. With the advance of camera and lenses, it’s now possible to create 360-degree photos easily. Before the invention of Photoshop, creating panorama photos were time-consuming and needed lots of effort.

Last year for the first time Photoshop provided features to create and edit panoramic images. It supports many panorama photos including 360-degree panoramas. I personally like to capture a full scene in my photos. So when announced, I was very interested and in a dilemma what can I do in Photoshop.

Photoshop recently released a feature called Photo merge which has many features to create panoramic photos. I had to take several images together and go through hours of retouching to stitch them together. However, photo merge does this automatically with ease. Today I am going to discuss how to create 360-degree panorama images in Photoshop.

Create 360-degree Image Panoramas

When taking 360-degree panoramas Devices like Ricoh Theta V and Insta360 lets you capture a full 360 panorama image in a single shot. In this cases, you don’t need to use Photoshop. However, if you don’t have that camera, you can use Photo merge in Photoshop to combine all the shots you took.

At first, you need to attach the images to create a natural panorama. Then you will need to use the Spherical Panorama command to wrap the scene. Then it will be continuous.

As you may have read my previous post about Normal Panorama, follow the guideline and shoot the full circle of images with appropriate overlap. You can use a pano head on a tripod. It will help you to get better photos.

When you are done transferring the photos into your computer, now go to

Choose File > Automate > Photo Merge.

In the dialog box, add the images you want to create the panorama. Please do not include the cover top photo or the bottom of the scene. You will add those later. Now you need to Select Spherical for laying out the images.

If you have done the shoot with a fisheye lens, then select the Auto layout and Geometric Distortion Correction. If Photoshop doesn’t know your camera lens, then download Adobe Lens Profile Creator from the Adobe website. Now Click OK.

After that Choose 3D> New Shape from Layer > Spherical Panorama. Now you have a full 360 panoramic photo at your hand.

Improve panoramic photo

To improve the quality and performance of painting your panoramic image. It creates a new layer above the panoramic layer. After editing the layer, have the option to choose the Merge Down option from the Layers panel menu. Also, you can press Ctrl +E.

Now it’s time to apply filters to the entire panorama. To do so, double-click the layer titled Spherical Map. From the Layers panel edit as you desire & save the file. On the spherical layout, the image automatically gets updated. Now you can export the panorama photo by going to 3D > Spherical Panorama > Export Panorama.

So this is the technique of Photoshop for panorama effect. It is now effortless to create a panorama in Photoshop. I hope you enjoy doing this with your photos. Photoshop also gives your ability to generate 360 Panoramas.
