Food Photography Editing and Retouching

Food photography has become a modern trend for food lovers. Photographers are more passionate to take yummy and mouth-watering image now than ever before. Whatever it entails, making a perfect food styling equipping the right props, is a tortuous task. Therefore, I am going to brief the important tips for chilling food images from photography to editing.

Ingredients for food photography:

First things first, before taking the right shots you just need to prepare your props for photographying. Generally, this preparation includes camera, lenses, reflectors, tripod, and memory card. Managing this tools, you can jump into the photoshoot.

Camera:

Firstly, never seek for the fancy and super-expensive camera for startup. Because this costly thing will not help to take appealing food pictures. Whether I suggest going through the user manual and macro settings. Most obviously, practice as much as you could with a preferable camera of Nikon or Canon. If you succumb to confusion which one to buy, choose the best one suiting your budget. Moreover, never forget to read the review of that camera. This will help you the most to get the best one you desire.

Lens:

Not expensing all the money to the camera, it is wise to buy camera and lens separately, for food photography. Addition to this, I prefer to select the fixed lens which is cheaper, smaller, and easy to take a vivid shot. To take the apex images, go with Nikon’s 50mm f1.4 lens. Occasionally, I suggest taking pictures with Nikon’s 60mm macro lens, whether you want to shoot really close photographs.

What’s more:

To take bright pictures, you must use white foam boards. Therefore, you can reduce the shadows of the plate and reflects light to the plate. Additionally, the diffuser will help you to soften the light source. And, make sure you buy a portable and strong tripod.

Now its photography time:

Now that you have bought all the necessary props for a photoshoot, let's dive into our main focus on taking food pictures. For that, I will be suggesting you about quick food photography tips and tricks.

Prepare fresh food:

As you want to take food photos, check that if there are any tiniest flaws are present or not. Get remove of damaged, wrinkled or ruthless food products. Instead, place fresh vegetable and food item for obvious great food pictures.

Use simple props showing cooking:

Fresh foods always look mouth-watery. Furthermore, if it is possible to take a shot while cooking the item, it enhances its beauty. Props like food ingredients at the side of the food item, surely make the picture outstanding.

Add a little oil:

To shine up the food item, I prefer to cook adding a little bit of oil. You can spread olive oil to look fresher the vegetable item.

It’s all about Lighting:

Last no the least, you need to care about the lighting for food photographs. For appetizing looking, allow steam to show up in your image. Also, try backlight for the perfect texture. Furthermore, never miss skimming light from behind the food item for a crisp and appealing look to the eye. However, I prefer you to shoot near a window during the day using natural lighting.

Editing food images in Photoshop:

It is not possible to show up the appetizing look of foods by only taking pictures. Maintaining all the conditions of food photography cannot assure what will be the outcome of photos. Photography tricks may help you to take great photos, but post-processing can make even greater images. Food styling, colour enhancement, correct lighting etc. help to increase the appetizing look of photos. All in all, image editing affirms to turn a monotonous picture into capturing the spicy look of taken food pictures.

Adjust exposure and white balance:

At the first of photo editing, I try to adjust the exposure of RAW images. This helps me to brighten the picture without over-exposing any image area. But, I prefer to restrain you from overdoing. In contrast, where there is natural lighting problem, you can adjust the temperature to have a warm glowing look. Also, adjust the tint of the image to bring out the natural colours of food.

Adjust light and shadows:

Adjusting light and shadow previews the best food images. For that, I use a large brush to lighten both foreground and background. After that, another brush to darken the foreground for marvellous food pictures.

Other adjustments:

Food photo clipping requires far more adjustment for the best look. Like as, levels lighter, adjust saturation and contrast, auto adjusts, crop and sharpen images. For a dramatic look, you can go for tweaking the colours a little bit.

In final, I would like to announce that here you may not find enough instructions you seek for. But if you have any more ideas, I suggest you share those.
